I have created this website to provide a place where we can post resources and ideas. For you, I hope it can a place that in some way helps your Mandarin learning journey. Most websites about language learning are written from the perspective of someone fluent with the language – teachers or polyglots. Here I want to go through the journey with you – as someone still learning. I believe it is an important perspective – we all experience it at least once.
But what do I know?
My ability to speak Mandarin has a long way to go. In fact, I have only just started seriously learning 普通话 little over a year ago (Dec 2015). My informal studies began with some pinyin, numbers, and some basic HSK 1 words and phrases, but it was little more than an introduction. I made the jump to focus much of my time on developing my skill. Since then, I have learned quite a lot, but still can’t hold a real conversation, though I can express myself simply if need be. I am absolutely fine with where I at my present state of learning the Mandarin language but am continuing to learn more daily – language, culture, history, geography. My present state being continuous learning.
Why am learning Mandarin?
Why would I put myself through the torture of studying such a difficult language? For me the answer is simple – I like the challenge of tackling something that is perceived as being difficult. Rather than extreme sports, my pursuits tend to be more cerebral. Since then I have really started to develop an interest in Chinese culture and history. Like all cultures, it has it’s good and bad, but that is mostly just a matter of perspective.
Despite ups and downs, I keep moving forward – One day at a time.
As an experienced videographer and photographer (but by no means an expert), I will be posting images and videos from my time in and around Nanjing & Shanghai, and hopefully other places in 中国.
